At 2-years old, young children are acting on whatever impulse they may feel, disregarding safety or even property! At this time, independence is also a crucial stage in development. A 2-year old wants to control the situation and make choices for themselves. Unfortunately, this often leads to a power struggle between adults and toddlers. We have entered the “terrible 2’s”
A 2-year old is now able to move around and explore the world on their own. The can walk to the room of their choice and explore the objects they want to explore without relying on an adult.
Your toddler is beginning to have a sense of self. They are beginning to realize what their own likes and dislikes are.
The onset of language has overwhelming effects on the adult-toddler relationships. Language allows the toddler to communicate with adults in a new way. The toddler is now able to share basic thoughts, feelings, and more. Even when those thoughts and feelings may not be what the adult wants to hear
In order for children to gain more maturity and develop advanced skills, they must go through a sorting out period in which skills are tested out, acquired, practiced, and eventually integrated.
As you can see, these three things are actually good things, skills we want our children to develop. Although this time can stress out adults, we want toddlers to experience all these skills and go through the “terrible 2’s”.
